Inter Milan have had a lot of great players down the years that they should in truth, they should have been far more successful than they have been. Like a lot of teams, it would not do their history justice, if only 1 team is selected from the host of great players that have played for them.
Unlike other teams, Inter have had a number of very good goal keepers like Franceso Toldo and Angelo Peruzzi but I have gone for Walter Zenga, who was a very good and charismatic goalkeeper. He gave great service to Inter and was part of the 1989/90 scudetto winning squad.
There have been a lot of very good defenders to have played for Inter Milan but I have gone for Javier Zanetti. He is 1 of the most underrated players to have played. He is adored by Inter fans though, who appreciate this great player. He was finally rewarded for the great service he has given down the years, by finally winning the scudetto last season.
I have gone for 1 of the most, if not the most beloved Inter players of all time alongside Mazzolla and Meazza; Giacinto Facchetti, who was the captain of one of Inter’s most successful sides. He sadly died last year. But he was a terrific player with a great temperament.
I have picked Inter’s most capped player, Giuseppe Bergomi and Armando Picchi. Bergomi represented Inter in SerieA on 519 occasions. He was also they youngest player at 18 to play for Italy the world cup final. Picchi was a very good defender and great captain as well.
I have gone for Evaristo Beccalossi who was a great left winger and won the scudetto with Inter in 1979/80 season. He formed a formidable partnesship with Alessandro Altobelli. The next midfielder is probably the best midfielder Inter have ever had; Luis Suarez, the Spanish genius who also managed the club in the 70s and 90s. He was very skilful with great passing ability. Lothar Matthaus, the German midfielder who was the driving force of Inter in the late 80s and early 90s. He was inspirational in their scudetto success in 1989/90. He was not only the driving force but he was also weighed in with crucial goals. The final midfielder is an Italian legend, Sandro Mazzolla who was a very creative midfielder for both Inter and Italy.
I have gone for Ronaldo and Giuseppe Meazza. They both scored lots of goals for Inter and Meazza was so influential that the San Siro stadium at Milan was named in his honour. Meazza is also the highest score in Inter history. Ronaldo may have lost some of his sheen with Inter fans with his behaviour in later years but while he was there he was really the phenomenon as his nickname at Inter ” il phenomeno” indicated.
For the second team
I have chosen Gianluca Pagiluca
I have gone for Tarcisio Burgnich, who was tough tackling and very able West germany defender, Ricardo Ferri who formed a formidable partnership with Bergomi, Giuseppe Baresi who was a very good defender in his own right, but was totally eclipsed by his brother, Franco; and Andrea Brehme, the west germany defender who was perhaps better going forward than he was at defending but still gave great service to Inter.
I have chosen Gabriele Oriali, who was a very good midfielder, who did a lot of the “donkey work” for the more creative players but he was very useful and particularly effective in Italy’s world cup triumph. A much appreciated player by fans and fellow players. Antonio Angelillo was an attacking midfielder who weighed in with a lot of goals. Finally I have picked István Nyers who was one of the greatest players to come out of Hungary.
I have picked Allessandro Altobelli, Christian Vieri and Roberto Boningsena. They all weighed in with their fair share of goals for Inter. They are in the top 20 of the highest goal scorers in Inter’s history.
Loads of very talented players have been left out like Karl Heinz Rumenigge, Hansi Muller, Jurgen Klinsmann, Mateoli, Nicola Berti, Ruben Sosa, all the players of their present squad but I could only pick 11 players per team.
